How to Complete Your Google Business Profile for More Local Visibility
A fully filled-out profile ranks better and earns more clicks. Here is exactly which fields to complete and how to write them.

Claiming your Google Business Profile is step one. Completing it is what actually moves you up in the map pack. Profiles with thorough information are far more likely to be seen as reputable and to earn calls, direction requests, and website clicks. An incomplete profile quietly costs you customers every day.
Why completeness wins
Google rewards profiles that answer a searcher's question without a second click. Every field you fill in (description, categories, hours, services, attributes) is another signal that helps Google match you to the right searches and helps a customer choose you over the next listing.
The fields that matter most
- Primary category. Pick the single most specific category for your core service, for example "Emergency Plumber" rather than "Plumber." Add a handful of accurate secondary categories for your other services.
- Business description. Write 700 or more characters that name what you do, the areas you serve, and a clear reason to choose you. Work in the way real customers describe your service. Avoid keyword stuffing.
- Hours and contact info. Set accurate hours for all seven days and add special hours for holidays. Make sure the phone number and website exactly match your site.
- Services and products. List your services with short descriptions and pricing where it makes sense. This populates the "Services" tab customers browse before calling.
- Attributes. Set every applicable attribute (wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi, women-owned, online estimates, and so on). These power filtered searches and AI answers.
Check your work
View your profile the way a customer sees it on both mobile and desktop. There should be no "incomplete" prompts in the dashboard and no blank sections. Then revisit it monthly, because hours, services, and offers change and stale info erodes trust.
Strelva's free site audit flags when your on-site business information does not match your profile, which is one of the most common reasons local rankings stall.
Frequently asked
What business owners ask next.
How many categories should I add to my Google Business Profile?
One precise primary category plus three to five accurate secondary categories. Only add categories that genuinely describe services you offer. Irrelevant categories can confuse Google and hurt rankings.
Does the business description affect local rankings?
The description is not a direct ranking factor, but it influences whether a customer chooses you and feeds AI assistants that summarize your business. Write it for humans, include your location and core services naturally, and keep it current.
