How to Make Your Website Readable by AI Assistants

AI search still depends on crawlable, useful, trustworthy pages. Make the important facts explicit without chasing unsupported AEO tricks.

Reviewed by Jacob Rhinehart for Strelva's co-founder; products and operations lead responsibilities.

People increasingly use AI-assisted search to compare services and answer complex questions. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, the eligibility path is the same as search: a page must be crawlable, indexed, eligible for a snippet, and genuinely useful. There is no separate markup or guaranteed AEO shortcut.

What makes a page useful in AI-assisted search

Publish original, non-commodity information grounded in what your business actually knows: precise services, firsthand examples, dated evidence, real limitations, and answers to real customer questions. Clear structure helps people navigate it, while internal links and crawlability help search systems discover it.

How to improve it

  1. State the basics plainly. Name the business, service, intended customer, geography, price boundary, and important limitations where they matter.
  2. Publish firsthand evidence. Show a real method, dated observation, result, source, or before-and-after state instead of another summary of common advice.
  3. Make important content crawlable. Use standard links, accurate canonicals, a current sitemap, and text that is present in the rendered page.
  4. Use structured data where it matches the page. Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, and other relevant schema can clarify entities and support search features. It is not a special AI-ranking system.
  5. Keep public facts consistent. Your site, Business Profile, active social profiles, and reputable third-party references should agree on facts that can be independently checked.

Test it

Use Search Console to confirm indexing and measure search visibility. If the Generative AI performance report is available for your property, use it for AI-feature impressions. A fixed monthly prompt set can reveal obvious factual errors in other assistants, but it is directional evidence rather than a stable ranking report.

An llms.txt file is optional. Google says it neither helps nor harms visibility in Google Search; the crawlable HTML pages remain the canonical source.

Frequently asked

What business owners ask next.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT or Gemini?

There is no guaranteed inclusion method. Publish crawlable, original, helpful pages with explicit business facts, firsthand evidence, accurate structured data where relevant, and consistent public information.

Does llms.txt improve Google AI visibility?

No. Google's official guidance says Google Search ignores llms.txt for ranking and generative AI visibility. It can remain as a summary for other systems that choose to read it.

Rather have the website handled?

Strelva scopes and builds the site, then keeps the agreed surfaces current under a managed plan.
