How to Add Review and Rating Schema for Star Ratings in Search

Eligible review schema can support search snippets, but self-serving business ratings do not qualify. Add it only where the rules allow.

Reviewed by Jacob Rhinehart for Strelva's co-founder; products and operations lead responsibilities.

Review schema describes ratings and reviews shown on a page. For eligible content, search engines may show a review snippet, but Google does not display self-serving review snippets for a LocalBusiness or Organization reviewing itself. Markup never guarantees stars or placement, and unsupported ratings can trigger a structured-data action.

Why it matters

Real reviews help customers evaluate a business. Accurate markup can support eligible search features when the reviewed item and page comply with the search engine's rules. The visible reviews remain the substance; the schema cannot manufacture reputation.

How to add it correctly

  1. Understand the rules first. The reviews must be genuine, collected by you, and visibly displayed on the page. Do not mark up reviews pulled from third-party sites you do not control, and do not self-serve ratings without real review content.
  2. Display reviews on your site. Show real customer reviews on relevant pages: service pages, product pages, or a testimonials page.
  3. Create only eligible schema. Add Review or AggregateRating markup only where the reviewed item and page qualify. Do not expect a business's self-hosted testimonials about itself to produce LocalBusiness or Organization stars in Google.
  4. Validate. Run a schema validator and confirm zero errors before publishing.
  5. Keep it in sync. When your review data changes, update the schema so the numbers always match what visitors see.

The honesty rule

The ratingValue and reviewCount in your schema must match real reviews shown on the page. Inflated or invented ratings violate Google's guidelines and can trigger a manual action that removes all your rich results. Real reviews, honestly marked up, are the only version of this that pays off.

Frequently asked

What business owners ask next.

Can I add review schema for my Google reviews?

You should mark up reviews you collect and display on your own site, not reviews scraped from Google or other third-party platforms you do not control. The reviews must be genuine and visible on the page.

Why are my star ratings not showing in search?

Common reasons are schema that does not match visible content, missing required fields, or Google choosing not to show them. Make sure real reviews are on the page, the schema validates cleanly, and the rating and count match exactly.
