How to Add Social Media Links and Share Tags to Your Website

Missing social links make a business look less established and waste free exposure. Here is how to connect your site to your social presence.

Reviewed by Noah Owsiany for Strelva's co-founder; websites lead responsibilities.

When a website has no links to active social profiles and no preview when shared, it looks less established and gives up free exposure. Connecting your site to your social presence is quick, builds credibility, and makes your content look good every time someone shares it.

Why it matters

Active social profiles can help customers see a real, current business. Social links in your Organization schema identify profiles that represent the same entity. Proper share tags also give shared links a deliberate title, description, and image instead of an accidental preview.

How to set it up

  1. Claim and complete your profiles. Secure your business name on the platforms your customers actually use and fill the profiles out fully.
  2. Add social links to your site. Put icons in your footer linking to your active profiles. Open them in a new tab with rel="noopener noreferrer" for security.
  3. Add Open Graph tags. On your main pages, set the title, description, and a 1200 by 630 pixel image so Facebook and LinkedIn shares look right.
  4. Add Twitter Card tags. Use the summary_large_image card type so links display with a large preview image.
  5. Add share buttons where they help. On blog posts and shareable pages, make it easy for visitors to spread your content.

Verify the previews

Test your pages in the Facebook Sharing Debugger and a Twitter card validator to confirm the image and text render correctly. One caution: only link to profiles you keep active. A link to a profile last posted to three years ago can hurt more than help, so link the live ones and let the dormant ones go.

Frequently asked

What business owners ask next.

Do social media links help SEO?

Social links are not a direct ranking factor, but they act as identity signals that help search engines and AI confirm your business, and they build trust with visitors. Link only to active, complete profiles.

What are Open Graph and Twitter Card tags?

They control how your pages look when shared on social platforms, setting the title, description, and preview image. Without them, shared links can look broken. Use a 1200 by 630 pixel image and the large-image card type.
