What I keep seeing

The first week after a layoff is full of decisions made under stress. A worker may have a notice, a benefits question, and no clear person to ask. General advice is not enough because the Department of Labor decides eligibility and benefit amounts.

What should exist

I would keep one worker page with the separation notice, pay information, confirmation numbers, a six-line skills inventory, and the next conversation. A local career center should be able to connect that page to resume help, job search, counseling, training, and accessibility needs.

• Name what you can do now, not only the title you lost.
• Ask which services are in person, online, or by appointment.
• Raise transportation, language, accessibility, and schedule needs early.

Use the official UI filing route and document checklist. Use the Career Center locator and Workforce Buffalo. Search Registered Apprenticeship information. The WARN dashboard can show reported layoffs by industry and county, but it is a public notice record, not a job forecast. Confirm every opening with the employer or agency.
