What I keep seeing
A prototype is not production. A shop that can make a part may not certify it, run a factory line, or sell it. The first question is which step you need now.
What should exist
I would keep a build brief that names the current step, required test, and next owner. UB SMART describes a Fabrication Factory for full-scale testable prototypes and a Motion Lab for working robot prototypes. UB's Fabrication Workshop and Manufacturing Works publish additional making paths. Availability, cost, safety, and lead time still need confirmation.
- Send the same brief to each potential partner.
- Ask what they can do and what they must refer out.
- Write down the next owner for testing, compliance, tooling, and production.
What a Buffalo person can do today
Write the build brief. Contact one UB facility and one manufacturing resource. Ask who can own the next step and what it will cost or require. Use Empire State Development's Western New York office to understand regional support. Keep public program descriptions separate from a promise that your product will be funded or built.
